Fertilizer Market Outlook Going into 2012

The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS) announced a plan to reduce finished phosphate production by up to 250,000 tonnes through March 31, 2012.

"Isolated phosphate market spot prices have become disconnected with the underlying agricultural fundamentals. As dealers and distributors focus on the macroeconomic uncertainty and delay purchases for the North American Spring Season, near term supply of phosphate barges on the Mississippi River has exceeded near-term demand. The current spot prices in this market do not reflect our outlook for the business, nor do we think they are sustainable. In response, we have decided to cut planned production by 250,000 tonnes over the next three months," said Jim Prokopanko, President and Chief Executive Officer.

The Company's second quarter results will be released after close on January 4, 2012. Volumes and pricing for the second fiscal quarter were within prior guidance ranges, for both phosphate and potash. The Company will provide guidance for the third fiscal quarter in the January 4, 2012 earnings release.

"We continue to expect an above average application season in North America and record-setting global demand for both phosphate and potash in 2012," stated Prokopanko. "We are confident strong farmer economics and agricultural fundamentals will ultimately prevail over the near-term cautious sentiment."

Fertilizer

Fertilizer continues to be the most volatile of the crop input costs and cost management of this important input may be the difference in being a low cost or high cost producer in 2012. The different fertilizer products have seen significant price increases over last year and likely will continue to increase due to higher crop commodity prices and positive profitability prospects for 2012. Healthier farmer balance sheets and continued positive crop profit prospects have signaled the global marketplace to increase acreage (if possible) and maintain or increase fertilizer rates and led to strong global demand driven markets. On the flipside, the E.U. and U.S. sovereign debt issues and potential economic slowdowns are factors, if unresolved, may lead to a slowdown in fertilizer demand and flat to lower prices.

Current Fertilizer Prices

ALERT: With the current uncertainty in the commodities market it is causing the fertilizer prices to fall below their expected levels for a short time.  I am getting some GREAT pricing on fertilizer with this market low, NOW is the time to stop waiting and pre-buy your spring fertilizer. Urea has seen nearly an all time high of recently $625.00 per ton.  Stop waiting to purchase for the price is uncertain and with the oil market going nuts this year it may trend up even higher.
